The Burger Project is a small restaurant on Maginhawa St., Teacher’s Village, Quezon City, which lets customers design their own burgers.
Actually, they give customers two options – either to design their own burgers, or to choose from the store’s designer burgers.
We’ve been hearing good things about this place, so M and I didn’t hesitate to make our way back to our old neighborhood to give it a try. (It is located right across Mona’s Bakery and the side street leading to KNL, for those familiar with the area).
When you walk in, you are given not a menu, but a checklist listing everything from types of buns, to types of meats, cheeses, burger sauces, toppings, extras, side orders, and drinks (including a list of milkshake flavors). The checklist will also give you an option to name your burger and to date your creation.
Once you have checked off all the things you want in your burger, you just sit back and relax while the kitchen crew does the rest.
My “weekend burger” was made up of 1 100% beef patty on a sesame seed bun with mozzarella cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, tomatoes, pickles, and honey mustard.
M’s burger included 2 Angus beef patties on a sesame seed bun, mozzarella, caramelized onion, pickles, and garlic sauce.
Angus beef, mozzarella, garlic sauce, bacon, honey mustard, how could you go wrong with that?
For our side orders, we both got onion rings. They have big servings – actually good enough for two, unless you eat A LOT of onion rings.
And voila, after a few minutes, the finished products:
When the burgers came out, we were amazed by its size and weight – they were big burgers!
We took a bite out of our custom-made burgers and were….disappointed.
I know what you’re thinking – you designed it yourself, so it’s your fault if it didn’t taste good. True, but the store was partly to blame, I think.
Their patties, albeit big, were bland – if it was seasoned with salt and/or pepper, we didn’t taste it, and their sesame seed buns were too soft – and by the time our burgers came out, the buns were soggy with the juices of the burger. I ordered bacon on my burger, but didn’t taste it at all.
By the time we here halfway through our burgers, they looked like big lumps of mushy bread and meat. In fact, we didn’t even finish them.
The onion rings were also a bit bland, then again, I think that’s pretty normal.
Did I mention our orders (2 burgers with standard toppings and sauces, 2 onion rings and 2 drinks) cost over P700?! A bit too expensive for my taste.
So all in all, we were a bit disappointed in our experience. I didn’t choose any extreme toppings for my burger, so there really was no reason for it not to taste good. The problem with the burgers wasn’t that they didn’t taste good – the problem was that they didn’t taste like anything.
I could easily think of cheaper burger joints with better burgers.
My advice: if you want to make your own burger, just make sure you know what you’re doing, or else, just get one of their designer burgers. That way, if you don’t like it, at least it wouldn’t be your fault!
